After being gone for two weeks on a trip, we had some wash to do. The first load I heard this thunking noise and when the cycle was done, I smelled a burnt smell inside the washer. It wasn't a burnt electronic smell, but more like burnt oil. I did a second load that was just towels. The thunking was much worse. I don't think I should do any more wash until this is fixed. The washer had a noisy spin cycle already. My husband thinks the shocks are bad, but this new sound is even worse.
I look forward to reading what I need to fix now At least I was caught up on my laundry this time! Do you think I have a lemon? We bought this in 2004 at the scratch and dent. We have been married 28 years. This is our third washer. The first one had been my grandpa's. I don't remember doing nearly this many repairs on the other two. I have always washed my diapers and I only have four children at home right now. It doesn't seem right.
Anyway, thank you for any insight you may have! I'm hoping to have a functioning washer again soon!
Oh! I like the changes to the forum while I was gone! I like having the key word search! I had thought that would be a great improvement to make!
Thank you!

Hi Sheri, I would check the belt and the pump filter first. Remove the rear panel to access the belt. Remove the bottom front panel and the filter cap (#14 on the break down diagram). Gene.

Thank you Gene! My husband will be checking out your suggestions tomorrow.
The reason we think the noisy spin cycle is so loud is the shocks, because the machine thumps and bangs. This new noise sounds like damage is being done and something is going to break. I haven't figured out the burnt smell yet. I wasn't thinking about the belt at the time. That could make sense, but I would think I would recognize a burnt belt smell. I have had that experience with my cars and vacuum cleaner, but it could be.
Well, thank you for your help and I will tell you what my husband finds. I need my washer to work soon. Potty training two children creates a lot of wash. ;)

We just checked out washer tonight. We saw that there was a blown shock in the back with oil sprayed all over. After putting it back (We didn't expect much from that shock.) and putting the pump back together and mounted, we ran the washer on a spin cycle. At first it sounded just like it should until the RPM's built up and it sounded so bad, banging, thumping and such a racket my husband could hear it from outside! He is convinced it is the bearing assembly.
Like I said before, we have had to fix this washer more than any other washer we have had and it's only four years old! :( We have the same amount of laundry, same work load as before. Their literature brags that you can wash 14 pairs of jeans all at once! We don't put all adult size jeans in there, but we fill the washer, not packing it in and with space at the top.
Is it possible we have a lemon? How would I find out?
Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help!

If I could make a suggustion as I have been a Sears Tech for several years. I have on more than one occasion have found something wedged between the two tubs that makes a horrific noise. If you haven't already checked the hose coming from the tub to the pump right there at the tub there is a big clamp holding the hose remove that and reach up in there (careful not to cut yourself the jagged edges are sharp on the inner basket) isn't something caught I have on more than one occasion pulled stuff out as the tub spins around it hits the debris and sounds like the whole rear end of the machine is coming apart Most the time its an underwire to a bra causing the noise As silly as it sounds when I get the wire out and show the customer they always ask what is that? lol it would be worth checking before you label a bearing problem you can also shine a flashlight around the tub to see foreign objects. Just a suggestion bearing replacement is quite expensive and you might as well buy a new machine also the ball in the hose is suppose to be there

Thank you for the suggestion! I think I can get my husband back there one more time to look. He is ready to give up on this washer. It's too bad too. I like it a lot, except for the repairs and we have only had it for four years! I guess we should buy the extended contract! We might qualify for the "no lemon" guarantee.
It sounds like this look between the drums is from the back of the washer. If we don't find anything, what should we get to replace this? What will serve my family well? We do a lot of wash, including diapers. I can do up to 10 loads a week. I plan to look at Consumer Reports at the library for our next washer. I'm really hoping we don't have to buy a new washer!
I'm open to suggestions!
Thank you!

One front loader I am really impressed with is the Samsung. This machine is incredible It has VRT and Silver Care. The VRT is Vibration Reduction Technology This machine will auto balance itself and has NO SHAKE what so ever. I have one on display and raised up one side so it has a hard lean angle to it Then I put it in a spin and within seconds it auto balance and smoothes out to no shake & nthat is at 1200 RPM. Totally blows me away The other thing it has is Silver Care where it actually has to silver bars the size of chewing gum sticks where it Nano Shaves and injects silver into the wash cycle which kills 99.9 % of odor causing bacteria These machines put anything on the market to shame Also you can get to that hose from the front access panel on your HE3. The model on the Samsung is WF328 the dryer is a dv328
