My washing machine stops between the wash and rinse cycle -- just like it would if the lid were up. However, if I give it a good thump or two with my fist, it moves on. I would like to solve this problem before my temporary fix stops working! Thanks!!!

Today must be bad lid switch day, you are the second person in a few minutes with this problem. You have the symptoms of a bad lid switch. Check it with a meter, or by-pass it to check it, and if it bad replace it.

Thanks -- from looking at the other postings, I thought it might either be the lid switch (which doesn't sound too bad) or the timer (which sounded ugly). Thanks for your help!
