GE Profile washer. Won't agitate, but I can hear it trying to, and the agitator does move just a little. It does drain so the pump is fine, and it does spin on the spin cycle. Belt problem? Transmission? Thanks for any ideas!

Remove the agitator and check the agitator coupling (#310 on the diagram).

Thanks Gene! The diagram is a big help. From what I've read, I guess it's just going to take a lot of muscle power to pull the agitator up and out? After removing the fabric softener thing, there's an opaque plastic plug with four small lugs at 3, 6, 9, and 12. I can't get that plug to push down on one side to remove it, nor can I get it to unscrew. So you think it's just a matter of pulling the agitator off of the coupling?

The agitator can be removed by grasping the bottom and sharply pulling up. You can use the agitator strap.

A dog leash and my son helped me get the agitator out. Now the coupling seems stuck on. I removed the bolt...which had a very rusted head and required vicegrips to get out. Any suggestion on how to get the coupling off? Hopefully this will be the last problem and I can get parts ordered and the washer fixed.

After reading other threads, I split the coupler and removed it. There was a lot of rust, so I feared the shaft no longer had any splines. I have been able to clean it now, and found the smoothness was only plastic from the coupler filling the spline valleys. I started the washer on small load (lowest water level) to confirm the shaft was moving. About to order parts now. Thanks Gene!

Part came in. I had to use a file to re-cut the spline valleys at the top of the shaft. That part had rusted a bit over the years, and was the reason I had to split the old coupler to remove it. After cleaning the spline valleys with the edge of a file at about a 45 degree angle, the agitator coupler was able to be pressed on. I had to tap it on top to get it all the way down and seated, then put the new bolt in, and reinstalled the agitator. Works like a new machine now!
