I have gotten the piece off but I don't see where to use the screw driver on the defrost timer.

where do i use the screwdriver at?

I figured out how to turn it and the fridge turned off. I listened for the ice melting and crackling but I don't notice anything. Should it be fairly immediate, or should I wait a few hours?

I did notice that on the defrost timer, there is a black piece next to the copper wire that is spinning.

Any other ideas?

I appreciate the help!

Ok, if it turned it off but didn't start melting the ice them it's probably the defrost thermostat (aka bimetal) which is near the frosted over coils in the freezer. It's about an inch thick and about the size of a quarter with 2 wires attached to it. If you have an ohm meter test it while its cold for continuity.
If it doesn't have any replace that part, usually around $15

Since your last post I wasn't able to find the bimetal. About 30 min after I turned the underpart in the fridge to turn the system off, it turned back on by itself.

I had to leave for work, and now I am back. The freezer is colder, because the popcicles have refrozen.... I'm confused now, what should I do? Is there still a problem? I do not have an OHM meter to a test when I find hte bimetal.

The bimetal is # 18 on the picture, connected to the wire harness.


To test the bimetal is to cut the wire, leaving long enough that if you have to reconnect you can. connect the two wires together try to advance the timer again unitl it turn the unit off. if so it's the bimetal.

I am getting an OHM meter from a friend in the next day to test the bimetal.

Is there any explanation why the compressor and fan would have turned back on 30 minutes after I had turned the defrost timer with a screwdriver in the control panel?

Yes that's exactly what it should have done. It means the defrost timer is working.
