how long can a refigerator be on its side befor it is no good?

A long time!!! Its when you stand it up-right that you have to wait 24 hrs. before plugging it in!!!! :)

Actually it is not a good idea for them to be on their side at all. But if one has been on it's side I would wait more like 72 hours before pluggin it in to make sure the oil is back in the compressor

I would wait until you have that one cooled down before I got rid of your other one.
