both sides are warm. evaperator heating element has melted in 2 spots and broken into pieces. I can fix heating element. If there is a hole burned into the evaperator is it worth having it repaired by a professional? Compressor checks out good.

This would involve replacing the evaporator. There is a lot of labor surrounding this job, as the system has to be evacuated and leak-tested before a new charge can be added. This kind of system service is typically fraught with problems that can cause many call backs. Many technicians don't even do sealed system work. You'll have to weigh this against the cost of replacing your refrigerator.
