Most likely the stem of the float is broken. Normally it just goes through and pushes the switch when there is no water. The float Here are the break down diagrams for the Maytag dishwasher Model MDB5000AWBGene.

The float pushes on the switch under the dishwasher when there is no water, causing the switch to close the circuit for the water valve.
If the float comes up with water, it releases the switch, causing the circuit to open.
