I am leaking oil from the gearcase where the shaft comes out horizontally and connects to the electrical rotor thingy by means of some plastic & rubber gear/cog thingies. I took the gearcase to my trusted parts store and was sold a pack of 2 oil seals. However, where the shaft comes out is too large for them to fit. There is a plug of some sort there but i can see no way of removing it. The question is, do I have to go into the gearcase to change the seals or was i sold the wrong part & the actual part I need is the larger plug? Here's the appliance parts pros link to the diagram. I go by the diameter of the old seal. It should fit tight on the input shaft. Use a drop or two of oil to help it slide on after you remove the old seal. The way I usually do it is to set gearcase on its back and brace it, so the input shaft is facing up. Use a o-ring pick to pull the old seal out or use a small screwdriver. Once its out clean the shaft and slide the new seal on, tapping it flush to the housing with a suitable piece of pipe or a socket the same diameter as the seal. If you need oil, use the real Whirlpool oil or 50 wieght non detergent oil.

The tip about tapping the seal with a screwdriver & hammer was great, but I did dent the worn seal beyond use. Which Is unfortunate since the replacement seals are too small & its Sunday so I can't get a new one.

I just checked and the part number I have is 285352 seal-oil aw. It fits every WP gearcase that I have worked on in the last 20 years. (Its the larger of the two seals most of the time)

The gearcase is 389244, the seals say LP897 & 285352. I removed he defective seal & the new seals can fit inside of it, way too small. The old seal has several sets of writings in it. One set is illegible, 59, & 63387.

Can you measure your input shafts diameter with a caliper so we can see if its a standard one? I just measured one of the ones I have sitting here and its a 1/2 inch shaft. The outside diameter of the seal is 1 and 3/16 of an inch. I hope that helps.

So did you get the right seals for the gearcase?

Yes, they had to special order the correct seal. The pack came with one like the original wrong seals and one that was the correct size.
