Latch either broken or fell off. Latch no longer works

The latch on my MAYTAG MODEL PDBTT49AWW got loose and does not work. It's just floating inside the display panel. I tried to remove the display panel but after removing screws I could not get that panel to disengage from the dishwasher. Afraid to pull too hard so I don't break plastic.
I either have to replace the latch if it's broken or reattach it. Any ideas? Fred

First, disable the dishwasher, preferably at the breaker. You may have t remove all the screws from the door, if the latch assembly fell beyond the console. Once you remove the screws (there are four of them [make sure there aren't any screws on the sides]), the console should just lift away, exposing the assembly and mounting bracket. Took all screws out. Broken bits of plastic on console assembly. Not sure what is broken on the handle. Bottom line. God gave us great hands for washing dishes. Not worth repairing. Significant drop in electric bill. Thanks
