Our Maytag will not spin. It seems to agitate normally otherwise. When in the spin part of the cycle, the agitator seems to rotate slowly (it's hard to tell because the interlock switch stops the motor when you lift the lid to peer in). It makes an occasional clunk and sounds "labored" the whole time, but it doesn't spin fast enough to throw fabric softener from the cup at the top of the agitator (not enough centrifugal force, I suspect).

Your thoughts?

How difficult is it to replace these parts? How do I best get access to that area to do the work?

Thanks. Got the kit yesterday and it looks relatively simple (we'll see). Hope this fixes the problem.

I'm going to replace the parts in the first kit you mentioned and try it out. Certainly can't hurt anything. I'll report back on the results. The clunking was only very occasional, by the way.

And one more bit of data. Since the pulley spun freely both directions, I was not able to go through the brake disengagement adjustment where you try different washer thicknesses. I could only fit the thin washer on the shaft and manage to install the E-clip. So I just put it back together, set the washer upright, plugged it in and set it to the spin portion of the cycle. When I peered into the tub with a flashlight, it appeared to be agitating. Don't know if this tells you anything important or not, but...
