Hi everyone, I have a problem with my Whirlpool Ultimate Care washer I'm hoping you can help me with. At first the washer would not agitate or spin, using this forum I figured that I needed to replace the clutch coupling which I did (it was in pieces when I removed it). After replacing the coupling the agitator works great but the drum will not spin for more than a couple of seconds. I also start to get a burning smell after about thirty seconds. The washer drains fine but without the spin the clothes will take forever to dry. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You:)

Is it possible that it could be the clutch and if it is how can I tell by looking at it after I have it off?

No I tried that and couldn't turn at all. I also checked to see if there could be something stuck between the drum and the outer part and could find nothing.

Remove the motor and check how the transmission shaft is moving in both directions. Possible the transmission is locked up.

Gene, I removed the motor as you suggested and turned the transmission at the coupling by hand, it turned fine in both directions, is the shaft supposed to turn in one direction first and the the other as you continue turning the area of the coupling (don't know the actual name)? It did this while turning it in either direction.

Sounds like the problem is a bad clutch. You have to remove the inner tub and drop the transmission in order to replace it.

Gene, you were right on. I replaced the clutch with a new one from APP and the machine spins like a top. Thanks for all your help. I know where I'll be going the next time I need appliance help.

You are welcome. I'm glad you were able to fix it.
