I have a Whirlpool model GS6NBEXRB01 the freezer is icing over. I defrosted it and replaced the defrost thremistat but the ice is building back up. Dose this unit have a defrost timer or is it handled by the main control board where the tempertature control knobs are? Any ideas on what the problem might be?

If your heater looks ok, you probably have a bad control board in the back by the condensing fan, part # AP4334000

Thanks for the fast reply. The heater coils look good. I'll replace the board

The defrost heaters rarely fail particularily if it is a iron (calrod) heater, but you could test it with a meter if you have one.

I replaced the freezer control board and the freezer now goes into it’s defrost cycle but the refrigerator half still is not getting cold enough. I turned up the temp controls but it is still only 49 degrees which my thermometer says is on the boarder of spoilage. There is air flow from the vents from the freezer to the refrigerator and no ice build up. How do I get it colder inside the refrigerator? Any more ideas on this?

Measure the temperature at the back wall of the freezer and post.

Check for a blocked air return vent behind the crisper drawers.

I checked and the freezer is still not defrosting after changing the controll board and the defroster bimettel. Could the new control board be bad too?

I would go to www.applianceaid.com for specific routine to manually force defrost to see if the board is working.
