The machine is making a sound like it is trying to 'empty' the ice. Could this a problem with the gears in ice maker, over freezing, or is there some other 'common' problem? rb

In any case I would recommend to replace the whole ice maker. - The part number for the ice maker is AP2984633 Here are the break down diagrams for the Kitchen Aid refrigerator Model KTRC22EKBT01 Gene.
