UserPostedImage Whirlpool Duet Washer won't turn on
Model Number: WFW9200SQ00 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years

I have a Whirlpool Model #WFW9200SQ00 and have had it for less than 2 years. I bought it from Lowes and called them to get it repaired and they sent a repairman. Since it was more than 1 yr. the warranty was out. The problem is that it won't turn on when you press the Power button. The repairman checked a few things and called someone at Sears repair center and told him the symptoms and then checked a few more things and they decided the door switch was the problem. The repairman didn't have any parts for the washer even though we had to set up an appointment and gave him the Manufacturer and Model Number and had to wait a week to get him out here. He had a door switch sent out here the following Tuesday by UPS and returned on Thursday to install it and it didn't fix it. He said the CCU was the problem since the door switch didn't fix it and the CCU would cost $400 but he said he'd take the door switch back and send a check for the $100 I had paid for that. I told him I wasn't gonna spend $400 for a CCU as I'd only paid $600 for the washer to start with. I had already seen the CCU at your web site for $268.85 so I bought a CCU from you (Order Date: 10/1/2009 Order Number: 845739) to try to fix the problem and installed it myself. Nothing's changed. I now have $129 in a service call to a repairman that knew no more about it than I do plus $100 for the door switch if he doesn't send the money back and $268.85 plus shipping to you guys and still have the same problem. When you press the Power on button all it does is give 3 quick audible dings. I can lock the controls and unlock them and can get the maintenance codes by pressing the Water Temp button for 3 seconds and release for 3 sec. and press and release for total of three times. All the led's light up even around the knob, then it displays the codes C:00 - Ding - C:00 - Ding - C:00 - Ding - U:01 - Ding - U:00 - Ding - U:00 - Ding - C:00 - Ding - n:00 - Ding - off - Ding - C:00 and stops till you press Pause/Cancel. What else can the problem be?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Tommy

First of all I have a great deal of sympathy for you. You paid big bucks for what should be an excellent washer, had a problem and when you got a service call from a reputable company you dealt with a service person who could not diagnose the problem and resorted to the process of replacing parts until something fixed it.

Unfortunately Whirlpool has not made these machines easy to diagnose, and has designed them in a way that creates problems like yours in a lot of cases. For even good, experienced techs in some cases the only way to fix problems with the Duet is to replace parts until it works.

Here is what I would do.

1. Check all of the wiring between the CCU and the Door Lock/Catch mechanism. On earlier versions of your machine the current flows from the outlet to the CCU and then to the door switch and then back to the CCU so you could have a problem there. Also check the wiring coming into the CCU from the main power line.

2. If that checks out test for 120v getting to the CCU. If you have it, I would return the CCU to APP and ask for an exchange. These boards are fickle and it is very possible you received a defective board.

3. If these do not fix the problem I would call back Lowes and explain to them that you paid for a service call and repair that did not fix the problem and ask/demand that they send another tech at their expense (for labor) to repair your machine.

Here is a service manual for an earlier version of your machine, which may be of help in testing some components.

Sorry I cannot be more definitive, but that is the way with microprocessor machines. Good luck.

I have checked for 120V through the liine filter and continuity from the door switch to the ccu, I'll check the voltages as well. I appreciate your reply and will probably do as you say.
Thanks
Don't think I'll buy another microprosser controlled washer. We had a 'bought used' GE we'd had for 25 years till the buttons got so rusty we couldn't push them. Thought the new technology would save money in electricity, didn't know you had to keep paying to fix the machine.

Ok, good. Let us know how it turns out.

My own opinion is that the technology peaked with the mechanically controlled top loading washer, but the manufacturers had to come up with something new so they went the electronics route. Your experience is proof positive what a huge mistake that was.

Hi Tommy, I have the same issue with a Kenmore Elite He3t, same codes. I bought the door latch mechanism, installed it and nothing ... Also tried removing the front panel, moving connectors, used an air pump to eliminate dirt, etc... still nothing, I press power and get 3 beeps but no lights ...

Has anyone been able to fix this issue?

After contacting lowes back in Sept last year, they told us our warranty had expired and we requested a repairman anyway. They sent us one and he knew less than I did about the problem. Changed the door switch after a week wait to no satisfaction, said he would get us a ccu for $400. I ordered one from AppliancePartsPros and installed it for $182 or so and it made no difference. They allowed a return for full credit. I had another independent repairman check it and he couldn't find the problem either.
As my wife was looking for a coconut cake recipe, she found the Lowes reciept (her filing system) with proof we had purchased the 4 year extended warraty.
She called the number on the warranty and couldn't get anyone to talk to. Press 1 for this 2 for that, etc. I decided to pay a visit to the lowes that had said our warranty was out. The Customer Service lady tried to get through to the warranty department and couldn't over and over until I said that maybe I should have our lawyer handle this. Magically, she pressed the right button and was speaking to a person. Since we now had proof, she got a serviceman to come and check the machine the following Tues. She also gave us a fax number and all the list of requirements to get our money back from the first serviceman. We immediately sent all required info along with a copy of our reciept and this has been 14 days , no reply yet. Anyway the new serviceman from another place than the first diagnosed the problem as a bad Motor Control Board and ordered one and a week and 2 days returned and replaced the board and it now works!!! He diagnosed it by removing the wire connector from the motor control board to the CCU and the washer turned on normal with no error codes. Of course it wouldnt run because of the motor disconnected.
This has been an experience, leaves me wondering about Lowes, The warranty company, the first repairman and the whole thing smells of a rotten, but legal, scam. Just my feelings!! If you do get new appliances, for sure buy the extemded warranty for as long as possible, and for sure don't misplace the reciept and warranty info, because they are counting on that!!! Good luck to all who have an appliance problem. On another note, we have a Sears refridgerator that quit and had the reciept at hand and they snapped to and repaired the thing pronto, well two weeks because of waiting to get parts.

Was thanked: 2 time(s) in 2 post(s)
Good info here will keep it for future reference. So apparently the failed motor control board sent msgs. to the ccu and it shut the unit down. Unplugging it caused a loss of the error msgs.
There is a very good repair guide at web site Whirlpool Duet Front-Loading Washer Not Running Repair Guide
This guide shows a good diagnostic at the ccu connector for the door switch.
