No, do not do that. That filter will prevent sucking in dust and dirt if it is not clogged.

Rich, have 2 "new" questions.. First is, I identified the "lines" on the new frige compressor.. (pictured below) "B" is the high pressure output.. With all the lines "open" I cant tell if A or C is the main "low" (suction) line.. When I plug either, the other one sucks.. Does it matter which of these I use and which I seal?? (A has a larger diameter inlet, if that matters) Thanks!

Second question is, I hooked up the compressor from the AC unit, and it "hums" like it's tryin to run, but there's nothing happening inside.. Any chance I just hooked up the wires wrong, or do you suppose it's froze?? It's pretty rusty on the outside, so I imagine it's taken some abuse in it's day.. Just for info purposes, I took a pic of the wires on it, and will note how I hooked it up, below the picture..

I didnt know which was the ground, so I hooked my white to it's white, my black to it's red, and that's when it "hummed" when I turned it on.. Later I tried hooking my green (ground) to it's black wire, and my gfci tripped.. So Im not sure what those wires represent on it? Red, white, black? Any idea if my wiring would stop it from running?? Thanks, as usual! Mick

If it fails to run, it's not worth working on. Generally the lower diameter suction line is the process stub that needs to be capped off.

Hey Rich! Got another question, not related to my build... Guy on the airbrush forum I visit has built one of these, and his compressor is acting up.. Apparently these compressors can stuggle to re-start if there's pressure in the line, pushing against the compressor? Well, his is acting like that, but he's sure his pressure "relief" valve and "one-way" valve are working as they should.. But here's the strange part.. If he lets air (psi) out of the tank slowly, the compressor will restart fine. But if he's using his airbrush and the psi drops rapidly, the compressor "trys" to start, but wont.. Do you think this is a start/relay issue or a "pressure in line" issue? (or perhaps something entirely different?) I was wondering if it could be a vacuum (from the rapid psi drop) that could cause it to struggle to start? Thanks pal!! Oh, if your bored, and want to check out his build, here's a link: silent compressor in PC case - The Airbrush Forum It's pretty neat! He used an old PC case as his "frame" and some paint ball tanks siamesed together for air storage.. (And alot of nice plumbing peices.. With all the $$ hardware pieces he could of probably just bought a real "silent air compressor") hehehe... :D

The high pressure will prevent the compressor from re-starting till the pressure goes down.

That's the thing.. If the pressure (psi) drops slowly it'll start, but if it drops rapidy, it wont? Odd, to say the least.. Oh, my new compressor WORKS!! Yah!! :) I was draggin my butt to hook it up, figuring I was going to be in the same boat, but I finally hooked it up and it pumps up the tank to 125psi no problem! Now I have a faulty one-way (check valve).. lol The manufacturers sure are proud of those "check valves".. They want like 20$ for one! :o Thanks again!

Well Rich, I think Im finally finished with it.. Got the new compressor motor painted up and mounted as well as the "pre" moisture filter, between the compressor and tank.. (Oh and fixed the check valve by cleaning it out with some wd-40 and compressed air) But I want to thank you once again for all the help!! I couldnt of completed it with as much confidence if it wasnt for you!! So thanks again bud!! If I run into any more issues I'll be sure and hit ya up again! ;) Sincerely, Mick

Here's the final product..

Great to hear that! As you probably know, the compressor depends on air flow to cool it. If left running without air flow, the compressor will overheat and shut down, not good for the compressor.

Yea, I hope it doesnt get too hot.. Im only going to use it about an hour a day, if that. With a duty cycle of appx. 2-3 minutes on (to top off the tank) and probably 5 minutes off (as the air drops from 125psi to 85psi) Im also wondering how much (if any) oil it has in it.. Was thinkin about adding some, just incase.. Can adding too much oil hurt it? I doubt it's full, since it was rolling around in a metal dumpster when I got it. :o
