The oil cools the compressor windings. Really low oil level will destroy the bearings in the motor. As long as it runs without overheating, you are probably ok. The only way to tell if it's low on oil is to dump it all out and measure it, probably around one quart in a large compressor, 1/4 in a small one. Yes, you can mess up the compressor by adding too much.

Cool, thanks! I wouldnt mind tryin the dump/measure, but are they built so all the oil will run out the lines if I tip it upside down? Or would I need to drill a hole in the top, to get it to "all" come out? I'll probably just add a few CC's with an old syringe, to make sure it's not dry.. Then monitor the temps as it runs..

Good plan to add a little oil and run it. Usually, all the oil will come out the service port if you tip it on it's side.
