(Edited--The age of my stove is approximately 23 years, not less than 1 year. The brand is GE.)

I'm hoping that someone can help me.

I have an older GE stove. The model number is JBS03FAD. I have purchased a new gasket for the oven and need to find out how to install this replacement one. The old one is still there, but pieces of it have been coming off for awhile now.

After you open the oven door, you can see the old gasket--running around the opening of the oven (it's not on the door, but is on the oven opening). How do I go about taking off/out the old one and putting the new one in/on?

I also see that the old one only goes halfway around the whole oven opening. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is it supposed to go completely around the opening? (It is presently across the top and halfway down each side.)

Is replacing this something that would be difficult? I'm hoping it's easy and something I can do, myself. Thank you very much for your help. My stove is approximately 23 years old and still works fine.

(I don't have the new gasket in front of me, but it's a GE one--I had actually called GE and then made the purchase.)

I thought I would move this up and see if there might be someone around who knows how I replace this gasket.

Thanks for any info anyone has. :)

Did you ever get this resolved? I have the same situation and not sure how to replace the gasket. It is wedged between the porcelian liner of the oven and the frame the door fits into.

I am quite handy but not sure how to separate the firebox (porcelain) from the frame.

Hi--No, I've never been able to find out how to do it. I have my new gasket, still in its bag--waiting to figure out how. I thought it would be easy, but, like yours, mine is "wedged" between the two also...and I have no idea what to do. I have my booklet that came with the stove, but it doesn't tell me anything. Maybe I'll try to call GE. I just thought it would be something so easy. Not! LOL Hope we both get it resolved. :)

Thanks for responding Vicki. I tore my old gasket trying to remove it so there is no door on my oven now and I have to do something. My wife is glaring at me now in agreement. I will pull it out of the wall tomorrow to see what can be done. If you hear a loud scream, or curse-like words, you know I dropped it.

It is hard to believe it should be this hard to change a gasket. I would buy a new oven if they fit the opening but all the ones I have seen so far are too tall or too wide or too narrow... I know, complain complain...lol

If I remember, I will try to take some pictures along this "Journey to the Center of the Oven."

LOL--re: wife glaring at you...

Well, I haven't gone so far as to tear the gasket...or take the door off...however, even if I did take the door off, that wouldn't be a problem as it just slides/fits right back on. It's a removable oven door, though it's kind of a pain to get it on once you've taken it off. But, the gasket...a whole 'nother story. I keep wondering if I wasted my money buying the gasket as it's not really a cheap item. But, anyway...

Oh, yes--please let me know if you figure it out.

I had read another thread, here, somewhere regarding gaskets...and it did talk about going in somehow through the back. That just didn't seem to make any sense that you had to pull the whole stove out just to replace a gasket around the opening of the oven. Bizarre.

Thanks, Terry. :)

I read one like that too. My wife said just buy a new oven after 45 yrs she needs it...lol She said just order one in the right size..hah! They don't make them in whatever size you want.

They are all about 6 inches too high or too wide...

Will let you know on the gasket. The oven still works well and we don't want to redo the whole kitchen at this time. You know, once one appliance is changed everything else looks wrong...then the rug and those walls...well.

Thanks, Terry. I completely understand, not wanting to replace all those things. :)

Vicki,

I think we are going to try and put a new oven in. I gave up on the seal. Maybe a retrofiter of old ovens will buy my oven and give me a little towards a new one. Of course the new ones don;t fit exactly either so I have to lower my oven 3" and cut into my cabinets...sheesh does it ever end?
