The washer runs, but sometimes in the middle of the cycle it gives an error on the display "sud" It will then sit for anywhere from 5 to 40 minutes before starting again. A couple of times the water didn't drain out when the cycle was complete.

Try using less detergent, or one designed for the HE (High Efficiency) washers.

Thank you for the suggestion. We have been using the same HE detergent for years. My wife ran out recently and ran some loads with normal detergent and it happened less. I know it seems odd. Any other suggestions?

You might have soap residue that is foaming up. Dump a 1/2 gallon of vinegar in the tub and run a cycle, should clear it out.

Thank you for the suggestion with the vinegar. I've tried a few times now with no success. I even tried dumping a full gallon and a half in the machine. I'm still getting the SUD error. Also, every so often, the machine won't drain the water at the end of the cycle. Any more suggestions?

Your pump may be cavitating from stuff stuck in the tub hose. I would pull it apart and check.
