My Maytag dryer won't shut off when set to any cycle. I must open the dryer door to shut it off. It would run forever. What do I need to replace in order for it to shut off on any cycle?

It can be several things; the push to start switch may be stock and it isis very inexpensive so I would start by replacing it and see if that does not fix your problem.

Here is the part

Part number: AP4047153

I am sorry but I don't understand why I should buy a new start button. I put my clothes in the dryer, close the door, push the start button and away it goes. The problem is that the dryer never shuts off. I turn the timer to the cycle I want which works fine except the dryer won't shut off at the end of the cycle. It just continues to run into the next cycle (hence it runs forever until I open the door). It heats, cools down and does everything it should except shut off at the end of the cycle. You are the expert but, I don't understand what the start button has to do with it.

If the push to start button is stuck then it would cause the dryer to continuously run. does this problem happen only on automatic dry cycles or on timed dry also?

Thank you for your quick response. The dryer won't shut off on any of the cycles. I've tried it on every cycle and it does not shut off. It goes from one cycle into the other just heating and cooling and heating and cooling without stopping. I've had to buy a kitchen timer to time the loads so as not to waste the electricity.

Also does the timer count down or does it stay in the same spot the whole time?

You probably have a blown timer motor or a stripped gear train. If you have a meter, you can check it. Unfortunately, they do not sell the motor seperately, you have to buy the whole timer AP4042430 You can verify this by sticking 115 volts to the timer motor leads and verify it is turning the little output gear. As far as I can see, your start switch is a simple switch with no relay, so it's probably ok.

If I understand the above correctly the timer continuously revolves.
If this is the case then odds are that the timer contacts 1 (GY/YL gray/yellow) are welded together and never open so your timer motor always gets power.
You could check this by:
Unplugging the unit.
Set the timer to the off position
Remove the wires from YL
And then check YL to GY with a meter, should be infinite ohms (open)
