Whirlpool dryer won't shut off when clothes dry (Auto Dry Miser)

Dryer is not turning off on auto dry (Whirlpool calls it Dry Miser). Clothes are drying properly but the dryer keeps running continuously and the timer does not advance. Yesterday, I left the house for 10 hours and the dryer was still running when I got home. Occasionally, the timer advances properly on auto dry (very inconsistent) so it does not seem to be an issue with the timer. Timed dry consistently works fine. Any ideas why my dryer thinks my clothes are wet when they've been bone dry for hours?
Thanks!

The only time that the timer advances in auto dry is when the cycling thermostat opens or it's at the end of the cycle in cool down (no heat). Monitor the voltage across the cycling thermostat. When heat is on, should be 0 (zero) volts and should be 240vac with heat off. When heat is off, timer should advance. If it doesn't, could be a bad power resistor or faulty timer contacts. Check resistor connections and resistance of resistor. Should be around 4000-5000 ohms. Resistor is inside control panel and is a black donut looking device.
