Kenmore dryers will not stay started. Only holding down the start button will allow it to continue. It also does not seem to be heating.

Odds are you have a bad even heat control.
If your dryer says "Even heat" or "Soft heat" somewhere on the console, you have a bad even heat control. The even heat control not only controls the heat, but it also engages the motor relay. That is why you have to hold the start button.

Is the "even heat controller" easy to remove and replace by a fair handyman?

Yup, it is a circuit board under the console. Remove the two philips screws at the front bottom of the console. The console flips up and the board is in the center behind the console.
When you order the even heat control, you may get a small harness and relay with the kit. Follow the instructions. It is not hard to do if you are familiar with simple hand tools. :)

Hi jbcholding,
In addition to Matt, if you would like the right part number for the control board we need the complete model number of the dryer.
Gene.
