After re-seating the connector on the timer, things have changed. The agitator no longer runs as soon as I close the lid, and I am not spraying water during the spin cycle anymore. I will have to look more at this tomorrow, but maybe some of the timer badness has went away.

If you have "normal" strength in your hand, you probably have a slipping clutch and dragging brake shoes. Hard to verify this with an amprobe as the newer clutches are much weaker with 1/2 the amont of friction pads. Pull the tranny. If you can turn the clutch rather easily in the clutch housing, you have a bad clutch. Repair or order a new one.
