The problem was that the fridge was beeping and the light "over temperature reset" was flashing. at the same time the temperature of the freezer and fridge sections was too warm (but sometimes it was going back to normal cooling temperature).
so, I called the service. they came and did nothing except they pushed reset button at the top of the unit (under the upper cover) - I did not noticed it myself otherwise I would try it too :)
but anyway. After that the fridge works fine. but the guy said the control board needs to be replaced (like there are two speeds of the fan and one is not working, bla-bla.. ). he did not look very convincing though so I am thinking - do I have to replace it now or leave all as it is? maybe it is not even the control board.. any thoughts?

thanks!

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL KSSS48QKX01 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a tech sheet and service manual
http://www.servicematters.com/d...0Sheet%20-%202254722.pdf
https://secured.whirlpoo...75172/$FILE/4317326A.pdf

He may have told you a porky because the manual says it is a variable speed DC motor.

Run the diagnostics if the evaporator fan passes then odds are it is OK

Ran the diagnostics today. The evaporator fan was showing incorrect speed (code 2) for just 1 second (it was stopped) then it started and the code changed to 1 (correct speed). I did it a couple of times just to verify but it looks ok to me. So, I don't know what was wrong but for now I don't see a point of replacing anything.. Right?

and thanks denman!!

yeah, exactly! This is a shame on Kitchen Aid - I wanted to have the best service so I called them to send a certified technician. So, their guy did not even try to do diagnostic - for sure this is better to start replacing parts one by one :)
And the best part is they could not tell me how much the part was - I guess it is up to the tech guy to set the price ;)
So, anyway - the tech manual is perfect and unless the compressor breaks I should be able to fix the rest of it. Thanks again man!

Crap is right.

It sounds like the unit is not firing up correctly after a defrost cycle.

I would replace the evaporator fan, the only solid reason I have for this is that it looks like it is a kit which usually means they have had a lot of problems with the original fan. The unit moitors the fan speed so if the fan is starting up a a little slow it may start an error.

I hate being a plug and chug jockey but sometimes thara is no other choice.

I see, thanks.. what about control board? I can run the test (as says in the documentation you sent) measuring the voltages, etc but because the fridge is still working fine since I turned it off and on I don't want to start taking it apart :)
I guess I can order the evaporator fan for now..

thx

Just an update..
The fridge started beeping again this evening so I ran the diagnostic and this time the evaporator fan was not working at all and the temperature was quite high. So, I quickly removed the cover and discovered that one of the connections to the fan was laying on the evaporator and had ice (and water) all over it. I dried it and raise it so it would not touch the evaporator. Now the fan is working again (not sure for how long though). :)
