I'll try to keep this short. I have a GE 1660 microwave that was one month short of expiration on the magnetron, when it went bad. I called GE about it, and they said I had to go through an authorized service center to get the warranty on the magnetron. They would not send the part to me. They gave me the name of a place near my house. so I gave them a call.

They told me that whether I brought it to them, or they came to my house, it was going to be a $75 service charge. I asked them what the labor charge would be on the magnetron, and I was told the total bill would be around $110. Knowing what microwaves cost, I decided to let them do the repair. This is one of those microwaves that require a metal frame to vent it on the top and bottom. It fits into my kitchen's cabinetry.

The magnetron comes in, and the service center tells me that instead of the $40 labor I was originally quoted, it will now cost me an additional $40 labor, because they misquoted the labor charge. So now it is going to cost a total of $160 to repair the microwave. I told them had I known that I would have never pursued the repair. The service center is not budging on the charge, and I am out $75.

What can I do about this service center ? I have tried to get the part from them, but they will not answer the phone.

GE has given me a $50 coupon towards the purchase of a new microwave, but they no longer make a microwave that fits in the $100 metal frame I have for my cabinet.

Anyone ?

Your Model Number looks incorrect usually they are a combination of letters and numerals.
Please check it.
I can find nothing using just 1660.

It is the JVM 1660WB 001. RV is the serial number prefix.

Thanks ! But @ this point it is not feasible for me to buy a magnetron and repair the microwave. I was just looking to see if anyone had ever been able to receive the "free" warranty part from a GE approved appliance repair shop. I was fine w/ $110, but when they changed the labor cost after we agreed on the $110, it became less feasible to repair.

Sorry I misunderstood your predicament.

I would try a different GE authorized service depot.

I've already spent $75. Another service center is going to cost that plus labor. On top of all of that, GE will not send out another magnetron.:(
