Have a dryer that was getting difficult to start. When the knob was pulled, it sometimes would start and if you turn the knob and pull again it would start. Then it just quit. I was told to replace the timer, did and still would not work. I took off back panel and found wires were melted and also one of wires from main power was melted.
What can i do to fix and prevent from happening again?

It is likely there was a frayed wire (hot) that grounded against the metal cabinet/frame and caused the problem.

Obviously you need to re do the wiring, and very carefully inspect for the place where the bare wire touched the cabinet, but it is possible it was in the place where the wire melted and you will not be able to see it.

After you replace the wiring operate the dryer with the back of the consold off so you can see if the problem recurs.
