I posted previously about another washer...Different washer, same problem. I think my home is cursed. My other one was a pretty nice one-Kenmore-but someone gave this one to me, and now THIS one has also stopped working. I'm going nuts.
Here's the prob with this one. I noticed a few days ago that my washer had been running an awful long time. Went in and found on the timer it had went on PAST the normal wash where I had it, past the stop, and on over into permanent press...It had never stopped. The water was blue by this time (jeans and such). When I got to looking at it, it would agitate, but when it spun round to when it was supposed to go into the spin cycle, it stopped, and the motor just hummed. And done nothing...I did notice there was a burning rubbery smell when it was washing. One other point is that I had put my son's sleeping bag in there, and when I pulled it out (before the washer messed up) I noticed the corner looked like it had been caught on something and ripped it up, some stuffing was pulled out. SO I looked around the drum and inside there. I pulled out some stuffing that had gotten caught around some different cords attached to the drum.
My hubby is not very concerned about this, as he does not have to do laundry. He has not even pulled the thing out from the wall. I don't mind a bit getting my hands dirty if someone will just please give me a direction to go. I can't afford a repair man. If it's going to get fixed, its more than likely going to be me doing something about it. Someone please help me out a little here. 2 kids in school, work, etc...I am running wide open trying to keep things together. I appreciate any help:o)

Sounds like you may have multiple problems, but lets concentrate on the one we know about. I suspect your failure to spin is being caused by something caught inbetween the basket and the tub, and you are going to have to remove the spin basket. This manual should be close enough to your machine to show you how. http://appliancejunk.com/ge/washer/31-10008.pdfAfter you put things back run it and see if it will go into spin mode. Run it with the front cover off so you can see what is happening, that is, if the motor is trying to turn in spin mode or if the machine is locked up. If it does spin, then see if the other problem is fixed. If not, you may be looking at a new timer, and for a little more in our area for what the timer would cost you can buy a nice used machine. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
