When the main drain pump in my GE dishwasher turns on, it sounds fine for roughly 5 seconds. It subsequently develops a low rumbling-grinding noise as if there is debris impeding the pump impeller. Is it possible to detach the motor from the pump in order to allow it to be cleaned or must the entire motor-pump assembly be replaced?

You talking about the main circulation pump that operates the spray arms, or the drain pump?? if main pump, pull out and remove plastic screen, left hand thread, and remove objects.
