A few questions to narrow it down:
Is the 01 flashing where the temperature normally displays, or only on the dispenser screen?
Does the refrigerator still cool normally?
Are the water dispenser and ice dispenser working?
Did the display start after a power outage, filter change, or service work?
Try these quick checks:
Power reset: Unplug the refrigerator (or turn off the breaker) for 5 minutes, then restore power.
Control lock: Press and hold Lock for 3 seconds to ensure the dispenser isn’t in a special mode.
Filter reset: If the filter was recently changed, press and hold Filter Reset for 3 seconds.
Watch whether the display changes from 01 to another number or returns to normal after a few minutes.

The 01 code is not flashing and is displayed where the measured fill would be shown.
Unit has not shown code or shut down since ice maker was disabled using switch in the freezer door.
Cooling normally, but if code was left unaddressed appliance would turn off, recognized by not light on inside refrigerator.
No filter, pwr outage or service related to code. Ice reservoir was removed recently for empty and cleaning.
Seems ice flap may not be fully closing.
If the ice chute flap (dispenser door) on your Whirlpool WRS588FIHZ00 is staying open, that can definitely cause strange electronic behavior, moisture intrusion, frost buildup, and in some cases control/display issues. The flap should snap closed immediately after dispensing ice.

The ice dispenser door does not fully seat. It can be closed the remaining 1/4" by hand gently.
I suspect there may be an issue with one of the control boards, the ice maker motor, or the dispenser auger motor.
To help narrow down the cause, could you please answer the following questions?
When the ice maker is turned on, does the fault occur only while dispensing ice, or does it also occur during normal ice maker operation?
Does the “01” light still illuminate when the ice maker is turned off?

The error code only clears if the power is turned off to the unit. It doesn’t throw the code again of the ice maker is turned off.
Once the 01 code appears the fridge/ freezer stops cooling, neither of the lights inside work. The display panel shows 01 but none of the buttons work.
Sounds like something is shorted in the Icemaker or the motor is going bad. At this point I would suggest replacing the icemaker ( W10873791 Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock ) and then see if the issue returns.
Before getting a new icemaker I would carefully inspect all wiring for burnt or loose connections
