WP74006072 Range Burner Spark Igniter Electrode sparking in wrong spot

Brand: Jenn Air
Model Number: JDS9860CDB01
Main Symptom: E burner not lighting
What happens & when: When trying to light the E burner, the spark igniter sparks below the mounting bracket - not from the tip of the electrode. This is a new igniter, replacing one that was 20 years old and non-functioning. Not sure why I was asked to post here, but Jellah from APP said to post my issue here.

If the burner head and the top panel where the burner head sits are thoroughly cleaned, especially near the electrode, does the problem persist?

Thanks for responding. The E burner is brand new, as is the sparker igniter. Both are spotless clean. It seems like the replacement part, that was made in Mexico, has a weak ceramic insulator at the 90 degree upward turn, leaving a path for current to escape before reaching the top of the electrode.

Unfortunately, while not very common, that can happen. It sounds like the electrode is faulty.

That’s my suspicion as well. The 2nd replacement spark igniter was a complete dud, too. They’re having issues at the mfg plant, it seems.

Is the failure happening in the same spot?

It isn’t. The 2nd replacement has no continuity between the electrode tip and the exposed part that plugs into the range.

With the second electrode being faulty, as identified by the electrode having an internal break in the electrode filament, it should fall under a warranty replacement since it is less than a year old from what it sounds like.

Agreed. Thanks for your help. As I stated in my OP, I don’t know why I was sent here in the first place. I believe I bought the first faulty replacement from APP, but I can’t find any record of it now. I guess my wife threw away the packing slip. From what I can tell, APP is the only source of these spark igniters today. The APP customer service rep didn’t seem interested in helping me locate my purchase in their records. Guess I’ll have to eat the cost.
