Just started today. The machine turns on but won’t agitate. It will spin, empty, and shut off. Any ideas??
Take out the agitator and check the “dogs”. Here is a video which will take you through the process.
YouTube - Broken Whirlpool/Kenmore Washing Machine Agitator Fix
Let us know how it turns out.
THANK YOU sidfink43!!! This is exactly what our problem is, and exactly the information I was looking for. My husband can fix this quickly and save us a bucket of money, thanks to you. Very glad I found this site, and very glad you volunteer your time and information to help people. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Well great, glad that is the problem since it is an easy and inexpensive fix.
Thanks also for the update.
Are you a writer in North Carolina?
Those are the parts that I thought were bad!
I’m so glad my computer is working well enough and I remembered to look this up! I am also very happy to see it is quite a quick and inexpensive fix! I knew those little parts were the problem, but I didn’t know you could buy just those and not the whole thing! Maybe now my wash can get cleaner, because the “dogs” aren’t all the way gone, but pretty close.
It’s so nice to have the search feature! I know you have had it for awhile, but I remember when you didn’t.
So, are the “dogs” a pretty universal part from machine to machine and brand to brand?
The dogs are pretty much universal to Whirlpool/Kenmore top loading direct drived machines, but if you buy the whole kit be sure and give them your model and serial number so you can get the right ones.
Thank you for your very quick reply!
What is included in the whole kit? Is there any advantage to buying the whole thing?
Insert your model number into the model number slot on the Parts page on this site and you will be taken to exploded views of your machine. You will be able to see what is included and how it looks.
This looks like the parts that were replaced on the YouTube video. I could see these parts on my washing machine and could see they were not catching. Is there something more that I would want? I don’t want to miss anything I need.
I went back to try to find the exploded view of parts, but could not find it. I found one for the oven I was inquiring about though.

Thank you for your help!
That should be it.
That part is just a package of four agitator dogs.

It sounds like you are suggesting that I might need more than just the four dogs. Am I confused?
Sorry, I’m feeling a bit dense right now…
Sorry for the confusion.
Some folks just replace the dogs, some replace all of the parts in the agitator that support the dogs. You can look at your machine and you can make your choice.
