I bought a used fridge. I was told it worked. It does power on however it is not getting cold. Now for purposes of not dragging it all the way inside only to find out it wasn’t working, I plugged it in to a power strip, plugged into an extention cord. The power strip didn’t shut off so i figured it was working but later when it still isn’t cold I started thinking that I heard somewhere that the compressor wont kick on if its not plugged directly into the wall. Myth or fact?? Any one out there know?

Myth.
All depends on the voltage/current that is at the receptacle.
A fridge compressor pulls a fair amount of amperage especially at start.
This is why the recommend it be on it’s own power line.
So lets say you have a small gauge 200 foot extension cord. When the compressor tries to start voltage is dropped across the extension cord so there is not enough juice to start the compressor.
This can also lead to the compressor over heating if it does actually start, they do not like to run on low voltage.
But it will click as it tries to start.
Also you would see the interior light go dim.
