Whirlpool washer with high pitch

This is a relatively lightly-used washer just a shade over ten years old. About three loads ago during the middle of a run it suddenly acquired a new noise - never good. Not quite a squeal but a new, higher pitch that accompanied the usual noises. Say about the middle of a piano. During the last load, my wife tells me (I wasn’t here) the washer paused during the final spin for a few seconds, then finished. Then yesterday it quit altogether after the wash cycle (it agitates quickly during the wash cycle then more slowly for a couple minutes before spinning - never started the slower agitation). I tried the dial in all kinds of locations in all cycles and nothing - no motor, ever. In other words, the machine would still fill but that’s it - no agitate, no spin, no drain. Today I had fished out all the clothes and was preparing to bail the machine out and tried the dial one last time in a few places when the machine came back to life - still with the extra high note. Put the clothes back in, finished the full cycle. So my timer seems fine, it’s not the lid switch. The noise tells me it’s down below. Any ideas where I might start? I’m under pressure to make the DIY/repair/replace decision. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The first thing I would do is remove the washer cabinet and the drain pump and check for a foreign objects inside the pump and/or hoses. Instructions are attached to the reply.
