Whirlpool washer stopped mid-cycle

Washer filled and agitated, and then didn’t drain or spin. The control knob continued through the cycle to the OFF position so now I have a washer full of dirty water. I tested the lid switch for an audible click, and also jumped the plug and that didn’t seem to make a difference. I pulled the timer out, removed the plug and inspected all of it. Everything appears to be ok. When I rotate the Control Knob to mid-cycle and pull it out, I hear a light hum, and an overhead light on the same electrical circuit dims slightly. Almost seems like the machine is bound up. Where should I start for troubleshooting/parts? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I would remove the washer cabinet, remove the pump and motor from the washer. Leave the hoses on the pump and just unclip it from the motor and move it to the side.

Unhook the motor from the transmission, but leave the wire harness plugged in. Jump out the lid switch and put the timer in the spin cycle.

Does the motor run then?

Thanks for the suggestion. After testing it as you suggested, the motor doesn’t turn when i try it at various settings. Still get the light hum and dimming lights indicating that there’s an extra load on the circuit. Also, the shaft of the motor is rusty and there’s evidence of some lubricant leakage, and I can’t even turn the motor manually. With the rust, does that indicate that the pump is leaking? I haven’t noticed any water accumulation in the past, but I guess there could be a slight leak. Thanks again.

Since this last post, i replaced the motor (and pump for good measure), and it has worked fine for several months. I don’t use this machine often, but the other day i went out to find that a load of laundry was just sitting in dirty water. The timer had completed the cycle, but it looked like the wash cycle didn’t finish. I took the motor off per the previous suggestion, jumped the lid switch and tested the motor. At first, all it did was hum and heat up, but i tried it again, and it started spinning. Put the motor and pump back on to test the unit, and it just hummed again. So, with the motor and pump all assembled, I tapped the motor with a hammer, and it started right away, and then completed the wash/rinse cycle. Ran another load to test it, and it stopped in the middle of the wash cycle again. I reset the timer and found the motor humming again. Lightly tapped the motor with the hammer, and it started working. Even though it’s only a few months (and a few loads) old, is it possible that the motor is going bad? Or, is there something else that may not be feeding enough current to the motor and thereby allowing it to stick? Any help is appreciated.

I feel ur pain, barbed. Ur problems are exactly what we’ve experienced for past few months—stops mid cycle, electrical burning smell, timer buzzes then eventually stops, gotta wait till system cools before restarting. Repair man said it was bad motor but we limped along figuring we’d buy new washer rather than replace motor. Tonite it won’t re-start..timer only buzzes.

After reading ur post, I wonder if it’s simply whirlpool’s defective motor design causing drive shaft to continually bind…might explain ur replacement motor’s same problem.
