Whirlpool washer burning smell

Have a Whirlpool washer that has a burning smell (smells like a clutch buring out in a car)
It will wash and spin, but it has a burning smell. What do I need to check to see what it is?

Sounds like you’ve got a slipping clutch and or sticky brake shoes.

Here’s a link that will give you an Idea of whats involved, and how to access the components and repair your washer,

It makes for a nice 1 hour project, and saves you loads of $$$$$.

1 hour… it only took like three mins. in the video:D but I think I can handle it:)

I also notice that there is a slight oil leak from the gear case input shaft. I located the part(oil seal), but I was wondering do I have to take apart the gear case or can it be replaced without disassembling the gear case?

If the brake shoes are dragging, it’s normal for the tranny to overheat and leak a little oil, the seal is probably ok.
You can go to my sticky above, “replacing direct drive washer brake shoes” for info on this and you must purchase the special spanner wrench mentioned.

Could it be an overheating motor. On an old washer we had it got overloaded and hot and even after replacing the belt it never worked the same again.

Mc,

Based on the description, “smells like a burning clutch in a car” that would be the “key” indicator, since the clutch pads and brake pads are composed of a similar compound. An overheating motor usually produces an acrid, sweet smelling odor.

This washer is a “direct drive” system, it has no belt, but your correct in the presumption, there could be damage to the motor windings if the brakes are dragging.
