I had the upper agitator (part # AP2906586) come off during washing. I noticed that the inner clips were broken and I ordered a replacement. I received the replacement and it just sat in place and did not snap or have any bolts to hold it in place. During the test cycle the new part came off without damage. I have searched the diagrams and forum and cannot find a solution.
There is an agitator bolt that holds the lower agiatator in place but the washer that is on it is not large enough to hold the upper agitator in place. The only other part shown on the diagram is an agitator cap which will not do much. This part was missing on the old agitator and had no effect.
Any help is appreciated. I HATE going to the laudromat.
The agitator bolt holds the upper agitator to the shaft and holds down the lower agitator.
This is the bolt you should have, it goes through the upper agitator.

If you need to see how things go together, click on your model number and you will be taken to exploded views of your machine. Look at the agitator section.

That IS the bolt I have (reusing original) and with it in place there is a 1/4" gap between the edge of the washer and the inside edge on the lip in the bottom of the upper agitator. The upper agitator is a new part.
Thanks.
Unless there is a problem with you new part I don’t know why it will not go back together correctly. Cannot say I have ever had a problem with it not.
I have this exact problem. The upper agitator is able to come off freely during the spin cycle- the agitator bolt is too small to hold it in place.
Did you ever find out what was causing it and what part needs to be replaced?
Thanks.
