Whirlpool top load SOMETIMES doesn't spin clothes out

For about 3 years I have put up with and have tried to figure out why my Whirlpool top load washer sometimes doesn’t spin the clothes out completely. Sometimes the clothes are stuck to the side like it has spun out, but sometimes they are at the bottom of the washer quite soggy. It does this randomly with both heavy and light loads. If I restart the spin cycle it usually works the 2nd time. (I am wondering too if when it does spin if it isn’t getting as much water out as it is supposed to - we usually have to use more than one cycle in the dryer to get heavier loads dry.)

Over the last year we have replaced the lid switch, the clutch, the agitator dogs and the motor coupler. The pump is about 3 years old & I have also checked the pump and drain hoses for clogs. None of these have resolved the problem.

Any ideas on what the real culprit might be would be greatly appreciated.

It may be the timer. After agitation stops, the washer goes into a 2 minute drain (without spinning). After the 2 minute drain, the timer stops the motor for a few seconds and restarts it. This process takes the transmission out of neutral. When the motor restarts, the washer should start spinning while continuing to drain. If the timer does not pause the motor after the 2 minute drain, it will never go into spin but will simply drain for the entire time of the spin cycle. Manually restarting the washer causes the motor to pause which is why it works after you do that. You will have to monitor the washer to determine if this is the problem.
