Whirlpool Top load does not high speed spin

I have a whirlpool top load direct drive ultimate care II washer and it does not high speed spin. I have checked the coupling and it appears to be okay. The water pumps out, put the clothes remain wet. It will sometimes high speed spin if I unload most of the wet clothes.

Remove agitator(1 bolt)
then remove tranny( 3 bolts )
the clutch is mounted on top the tranny.
Very easy fix.

I had a problem like this a few months ago it was caused by a worn basket drive block—part number --389140.

Fyxer - Hot Hubs

Before removing tranny, turn the tranny coupler clockwise till the spin basket starts to turn. If hard to turn the coupler, you have dragging brake shoes causing the slow spin.

It is very difficult to spin. Does it matter what the setting is? I noticed that it was not set to off. I tried to spin the basket and it spins with difficulty also. There is a light residue of oil sprayed around the inside of the machine case about even with the tranny.

the next thing to do is remove the agitator and then the tranny and inspect this:The little ear will wear down or break off or their will be brakes locked up as mentioned before.

I did not notice any of the ears breaking off. There is no apparent damage to this area of the machine. This picture in the attachment is not very good, but maybe it can help. I tried to move the assembly around, but when I did it dropped out of the casing a little. Is there a way to get it re-aligned? Where do I look for binding?
Thanks for your help.

Go to my thread in the general talk section, page 4 “replacing brake shoes”

I cannot seem to find your page. I would like to read that.

Don’t know how to transfer post! Go to general talk section, page four “replacing direct drive washer brake shoes”, the 5 star post.

how do i get to the clutch system

That post "replacing direct drive brake shoes is now on page five!! Also, shine a lite in the spin basket and look through the plastic tub, you may have something stuck in there.
