Today the freezer on my side by side thawed out and ruined all of the food-the refrigerator side is fine-freezer side is cool but not cold-thermostat turned to highest setting

Lights?
Evaporator/freezer fan?
Condenser/compressor fan?
Compressor? Usually you can hear it but should also be able to feel it vibrating. Also if it is running is it on all the time except when the unit goes through a defrost cycle or is it cycling quick on/off?
If the fans run and the compressor is on all the time then remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.
If they are heavily iced/frosted over you have a defrost problem.
If there is just frost in one area or no frost in a large area then it is probably a sealed system problem.
Fan/compressor are running-removed back panel in freezer and there is NO frost on the coils
As long as the compressor has run for half an hour or so and you get no frost on the coils then it is a sealed system problem.
Checking during or shortly after a defrost cycle can give you the wrong diagnosis.
Since it sounds like a sealed system problem it will be an expensive repair.
Often makes more sense to put the dollars towards a new unit.
