Whirlpool Refrigerator AMP Draw

What should the AMP draw be for Model # ED25PEXHW00 when it is plugged in. Repairman was here and the AMP draw was 2.9. Not sure if fan factors in with compressor to give higher number or not. Inside label reads max amp draw is 6.5. Looking for some advice before I order a new compressor. Thanks

What exactly is wrong with the refrigerator?

Was the bad compressor diagnosed by your repairman? If yes, did he do anything else besides the current test?

Gene,
He did not do any other test. He did put new relay parts on to try it out and it worked but showed the 2.9 draw then. I am not real confident that it is actually bad. Thanks for any input you can give.

What was the original problem? Why did you call him?

Gene.

Stopped cooling as it has done 3 times in the last eleven years. They always replace the relay switch on the side of the compressor.

Patrick,

I really feel sorry for troubles with your refrigerator. If you do know how to handle a simple tools and work with a multimeter, and you are willing to diagnose it yourself, then we can guide you.

Gene.

A higher than normal compressor current can be caused by the compressor sucking in non-compressables due to a refrigerant leak. A gauge on the low side would confirm.
Measure the freezer and fridg temperatures and post.

Gene,
What would I need to look for when hooking multi meter up to it. I am not real experienced with them, but I can follow directions pretty good.

Patrick,

Is the compressor running?

If it’s not, does it make any clicking noise?

If it is, check if the cover on the back of the refrigerator is in place. it must be. Remove the cover and check how hot is the compressor on touch. If it’s hot, make sure the condenser coils are clean and the fan next to the compressor is on.

Remove the rear panel in the freezer and check how the evaporator coils are covered with snow/frost. Normally it should about 100% covered with thin snow/frost.

Post the results.

Gene.

Compressor is running as well as fan. Coils are as clean as a vacuum would get them, no build up between coils. Aside from possibly blowing with air nozzle I dont think I could get them any cleaner. Freezer coils do have thin layer of frost on entire line. The compressor is hot enough that I cannot hold my hand on it for more than 5-8 seconds. Temps in fridge and freezer are getting close to what they should be. It has been running most of the day to cool back down from room temp. after replacing the relay and starting device this morning.

Sounds not bad besides the compressor is hot. What is the ambient temperature?
