Since the ice maker is able to make and dump one batch of ice, we know several key components are already working:
-
The freezer is cold enough to make ice (ideally 0-5°F).
-
The ice maker motor can complete a harvest cycle.
-
The mold heater is working well enough to release the ice.
The next step is to determine why it isn’t starting the next cycle.
1. Check the Freezer Temperature (Quickest Test)
The ice maker will not begin another harvest until the mold thermostat senses the mold has dropped to about 15°F or colder.
-
Measure the temperature with a thermometer placed between packages near the ice maker (don’t rely on the display).
-
If the freezer is warmer than about 10°F, the cooling issue needs to be corrected first.
2. Verify the Ice Maker Is Receiving Water Every Cycle
After the ice dumps, watch or listen for the fill cycle.
If the mold still contains water after it stops, then the problem is occurring before the next harvest, not during the fill.
3. Inspect the Fill Tube
Remove the ice maker and inspect the plastic fill tube where water enters the mold.
-
If it is partially frozen, thaw it and determine why it froze.
-
A water inlet valve that seeps between cycles is a common cause.
4. Run the Ice Maker Diagnostics
This Whirlpool model has built-in diagnostics that allow you to:
If the ice maker passes a manual harvest and manual fill but still only makes one batch before stopping on its own, the ice maker assembly itself is the most likely failure, as the internal thermostat or control inside the ice maker can fail intermittently.
A couple of questions that will help narrow it down:
-
Does it dump the first batch of ice, or does it simply freeze one batch and leave it sitting in the mold?
-
After it stops, is the mold empty or still full of frozen cubes?
-
Have you tried pressing the TEST/RESET button on the ice maker, and if so, does it complete a full harvest and refill? Those answers will help determine whether we’re dealing with a water supply issue, a cooling issue, or a failing ice maker assembly.
