Whirlpool Gas Dryer Runs, Start Heating then gas heat goes off - stays off

Gas dryer starts/runs ok AT START… but heating stops after about 5-10min (with tumbler/blower still going). To be clear, sequence is:

  • dryer starts/runs AS NORMAL for a minute or so…
  • then i can see glow/igniter start…
  • gas flame lights & runs as normal for ~5-10min…

    but then stops & does not relight (although I’ve seen glow/igniter heat up)

  • dryer continued tumbling on with cool air.

:frowning:

Other info:

  • if allowed to cool down for say 5min, will restart above sequence

  • if a quick 1min stop/restart tried, there is no gas re-lighting (although glow/igniter goes on for a few seconds)

  • I suspect the sensor (on heater section), yes/no? It measure less than 1ohm accross whether hot OR cold.

  • i have not tested/measured other thermostats…

Thx.

DRS
Can see the glow/igniter

Hi, Check the thermostats for continuity. Unfortuneately the model number posted I can locate anywhere.
Can you please double check that.
Nat

Ok thanks, I’ll check them. Model number is Whirlpool SGDS800HQ0 (think i might have intially typed “5” vs. “S”). Whirlpool gas dryer with Costco/Kirkland badging.

Found that:
-Sensor continuity good, at ~0 ohms (still);
-Main thermostat, has 4 leads;

with ~0 ohms between two of them and
approx. 7k ohms between the 2nd set of leads.
-Backup thermostat at 0 ohms
Whether hot or cold, the resistances above do not seem to change.

Let me know that you think.

Thx.

DRS

did you check them with wires attached or detached?

It was a detached measurement…

Add’l. info: Also, when dryer unning, no voltage DROP accross any of the (three) sensors/thermostats… (measures 117vac at each terminal)…

I’d have to say the regulator is going out.

DRS,

According to your description, most likely the problem with your dryer is a bad gas valve coils.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool dryer Model SGDS800HQ0

Gene & ibertyappl;

Are you guys talking about the same part; coils / regulator?

The coils are on top of the regulator. You can see them on the break down of your dryer.
Hope that helps.
Gene was more help than I was. Glad he jumped in!

Got the part, replaced coils and all works great now. Thanks Gene!!

You’re welcome. We’re glad you were able to fix it.

I have the same problem as DRS. Model #LG5801XKW0 Whirlpool
Where is the coil? Or what else could it be?

Thanks

Newguy,
Your coils are a little different that DRS’ but if you can pull up the breakdwon of your machine they are #32 on trhe burners page.

I have the same problem but when I loosened the limiter, part 15 ( Model SGDS800HQ0, ) the burner lit everytime. When it was tight it would fail to light. Anyone know what this brass screw/cap actually does? thanks

evanv,

Sounds like the problem with your dryer is a bad gas valve.
