whirlpool duet washer won't drain

My whirlpool duet washer won’t drain. It usually shuts off on rinse or spin. The code is f02 which would indicate the need for a new water pump, but the tub also won’t spin. The water pump runs but is noisy. Does a faulty water pump stop the tub from moving or do we likely hava a nother problem in addition to the pump?thanks. We just bought this washer used.

Check the drain pump filter (#14 on the pump & motor break down diagram) for a foreign objects and hoses for clog.

If there is nothing wrong - replace the pump.

Hi! I have the same problem only the Washer Spins just fine. My Water Pump isn’t noisy either. It just displays ‘F02’ when at the Drain Cycle. After it does this, I unplugged the Machine, removed the Drain Hose and also checked the Drain Hose outlet in the wall behind the Washer. I cleaned everything out and replaced all of it, then I tried it again starting from the Drain/Spin Cycle and it did it successfully. but when I try to start a whole new Wash Cycle, it gives the ‘F02’ error code again at the first Drain Cycle (after initial Wash). Please help me too. Thank you so much. :confused: :slight_smile:

Check the pressure switch as described in the Service manual (page 5-6). Make sure the pressure hose is clean.

If there is nothing wrong, replace the CCU.

If you do need the correct part numbers, post the complete model number of the washer.

I think I know what the problem might be. I bought my washer used as well and had the same issue after about 4 months. First, disconnect the drain house from the back (the hose that goes to your wall). Take it it outside and blast a garden hose throught it (with a garden hose gun on the end to get good pressure). If that doesn’t do it (like it didn’t for me) you probably have something stuck where the water begins to drain from the drum (inside the washer). First, try to drain your washer using the drain/spin cycle. If your problem is real bad, this may not work. Then, open the back of it (you’ll be surprised at how simple it looks inside). Get on the floor and look under the drum. You’ll see a black, ribbed hose that is about 4 inches wide connected to the drum. You’ll need to disconnect this…but, know that you’ll get some water pouring out. I thought the water wasn’t going to stop, but it wasn’t too bad. Have about 3 big towels handy. After you remove this (and clean up the water, look at where the other end of that black hose is connected to. I reached in that little hole and pulled out a whole, adult wool sock, 2 baby socks, pieces of paper, coins and a couple of other things. The hole was only about 2 inches wide, and I couldn’t believe how many things were in it. That is why I always use those mesh, lingerie bags for socks whenever I do laundry now. I guess the drain in the machine is so powerful that it can just suck socks (and probably wash cloths) and anything small through it. After you clean it out, just reattach the hose the way you took it off, put the back back on and you should be good to go. Good luck.

First, You don’t have to take the back off. If you take the cover off the bottom of the front there is a drain, the cover aka plug screws off, and lots of water will drain out. Clean out what ever is in there.. I had like lots of lint and debri. Simple easy…

Also, NEVER remove the tub hose at the tub. If you do, you will need to buy a new band clamp, as the spring clamp will be impossible to put back on!

I did as trnash9 said, after trying everything else. there was a big sock in the hose. i took a clamp and it now will not go on. besides buying a new clamp, any suggestions on how to re-attach this clamp?? thanks!!!

for an f2 code i start with the pump filter. remove lower front cover plate, remove wiring harness so you can access pump. unscrew pump filter cover. check filter for debris. careful as water will pour out. be prepared. you can remove tub to pump hose from here if necessary to clean further. Do this once a year as a maintenance item and you will save on replacing the pump. best thing is you do not have to pull out the washer. this is all done through the front, quick and easy!

i have gone through the steps and cleared a plastic ziploc bag from the filter. thought that would be it, but it is still not draining and giving me the F2 error. i checked the hose that drains out by blowing air and water back through it and it seemed clear.

i am looking at replacing the pump now. also doing this myself to save some $. do you know if i have to buy both the pump and motor assembly or is it ok to just purchase the motor? (and save half the cost?)

Whirlpool does not sell the pump motor separate for this model, so you have to buy the whole assembly.

Before you will order it, remove the hose from the pressure switch and blow some air through it into the tub. Check for 120 VAC to the pump motor while the control calls for drain. Then give it a try and post the results.

i purchased this this afternoon. says will work for GHW9100LW1. I was able to easily separate the motor from the pump.

I have a similar but different problem with mine. Model GHW 9250 MTO.

The first load of the day, everything works normally.
If we start a second load right away, the drain pump malfunctions and reports F02 code. The pump runs, but makes a clicking sound.

We have to allow the machine to set and rest for several hours, which apparently allows the machine to reset and then the drain and spin cycle works again to finish the load.

I’ve disassembled the drain hose, pump and air vent and found no blockage. Soap scum build up, but no socks or coins or pen caps.

This sounds like an electrical issue to me.
What is my next step ? Replace the pressure sensor, the pump, the control unit ?

follow up to my issue… i purchased and easily installed a new motor. i found it on ******** - the motor only, not the assembly, which saved me about $60. put it all back together and it’s been working beautifully for a couple months now.

Can a pump replacement be necessary, even though it works fine after “rest” ?

Well, I pulled the front panel off again and disconnected the main drain hose that is between the tub and pump.

I cleaned out mainly soap scum and a piece of string in and around the plastic ball.

After putting it all back together, I still have the same results. The first load works perfectly and then the second load errors out at the final rinse and spin.
After several hours of rest, we restart and it finishes.

Should I try a new pump ? Is that the next best step ?
