Whirlpool Double Oven - Upper Not Working

Have seen this problem posted several times, but …

The upper oven stopped working. Everything works perfect except no heat from top or bottom element. Control panel works perfect, clock is fine, preheat displays, time bake, everything!

I replaced the back thermostat # 4451442 with part # 37 from this site (it is called thrmst-fix, part looks a lot different from original, but I trusted it) … no difference.

Now what? I really dont want to get Whirlpool out here - I am 45 minutes to closest repairman. It is my understanding if the control panel thermal fuse blew, then the control panel would not be working, correct?

It seems odd that both elements would have went bad at same time, but keep in mind that I know nothing about this stuff. I just have a repair manual and follow directions well!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi TOMF,

You have to have a simple multimeter and to proceed with troubleshooting. If you are - let us know and we’ll guide you through.

OK Gene, that puts me a little out of my comfort zone, but willing to try! Can I pick one up at a WalMart store that I will be close to today?

Thanks.

You can do it at any store. It should have ability to measure voltage as well as resistance.

Gene,

How do I remove the trim pieces on the double oven to remove the unit from the wall, it as a Whirlpool unit GBD307PDS7.

I too have a unit not working after activating the self cleaning function.

I bought the thermo fuse and need to replace it.

Thanks.

steffco1,

Open the lower oven door and remove the screw on each side trim. Pull the trim from the bottom and slide it down .

Gene.

Gene,

I have the multimeter … ready for orders!

Please be detailed as this is first time using this device. Thanks.

Tom

Well Tom, lets start with the post from our forum How to check continuity with Ohmmeter.

Gene.

ok, read it … what do we want to test first?

Hi Tom,

Turn off the oven circuit breaker.

Open the lower oven door, remove the screw on each side trim, pull the bottom of the trim toward yourself and slide it down to release it from the control panel tab.

Remove the screw on the bottom of each side of the control panel. Pull the bottom of the control panel toward yourself and up to release it from the tabs.

Locate two identical relays on the control board with two wires plugged into each of the relays - 2 red wires into one relay (we will cal it relay#1) and one red and one red with white strip into another (relay#2).

Remove the red wire from the relay#2 and both red wires from the relay#1. Check for continuity between the first red wire (relay#2) and each of the red wires from the relay#1. Mark the red wire (relay#1) which has the closed circuit with the red wire (relay#2).

Plug this wire and the red wire from the relay#2 back in place, living the second red wire from the relay#1 out (insulate it).

Turn the oven circuit breaker on. Turn the Bake on the upper oven on and check for 120VAC between the terminal on the relay#1 where the red wire was connected and ground.

Post the results.

Gene.

Gene,

The lower door is locked shut since the power went out.

How do I get the door open?

sreffco1,

Which oven was on self clean when it happened?

Is the display blank?

Did you check the circuit breaker?

I need as much information as possible.

Gene.

Gene,

The power cut off it wasn’t on self cleaning (the top and the bottom oven) and the screan is blank. I have cut off power to the unit. When I turn the power back on the screan is blank and the oven is locked

Looking through the center vent (#34 on the break down diagram) and on the picture of the door latch bellow

you have to push in the solenoid (the white piece on the bottom of the picture) and move the hook to the side to unlatch the door.

After you open it, check the low voltage transformer (#6 on the break down diagram) and the thermal fuse, plugged into the control board.

Thanks Gene.

I follow you fairly well. But have some questions before I get in to this. Please forgive my ignorance on this.

You say:

“Plug this wire and the red wire from the relay#2 back in place, living the second red wire from the relay#1 out (insulate it).”

How do I insulate it?

Then you say:

“Turn the Bake on the upper oven on and check for 120VAC between the terminal on the relay#1 where the red wire was connected and ground.”

Do I use the multimeter for this? If so, red wire from multimeter goes to relay terminal? and black goes to ground? Not sure where ground is? At this point should I get some help? Not real comfortable doing this with the oven on.

Thanks.

Can you post a picture of your multimeter?

Gene.

Gene, here is link to picture … it is a GE2527

 2. Wrap the wire terminal in an insulation tape.

 3. Yes, you have to use the multimeter.

Place the control panel in safe position so it sits stable and no electric parts and/or connections are touching each other and/or any body parts.

Switch the multimeter from “Ohm” to “ACV” 250 range what means the full scale is 250VAC. Touch the relay terminal with any one of the probe (does not matter which one) while the other probe is connected to any metal (ground) part of the oven body and read the meter scale.

Post the results.

Gene,

I was able to get the oven out and inspected. The heating element in the upper oven was cracked off on one lead, so it appears that it shorted out. I know I need to buy a new element part #7. I have already bought one thermo Fuse, it there any other part that I should check or buy.

Thanks…

steffco1,

Did you check these parts?
