Whirlpool direct drive washer makes ratchet noise while spinning

Can anyone help with this?? My Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer (Model LSR8233EQ0) would not spin and started making a ratcheting noise when it tried to spin. I replaced the motor coupler and now it spins. But, it still makes that ratcheting noise during the spin cycle. It drains & agitates fine. It looks as if the agitator is slipping during the spin cycle. Could this be a clutch or brake issue? Local repair shop says transmission appears fine.

Here is a link to a video of it that I posted on youtube:

Faulty transmission for sure.

What makes you so sure it is the transmission? I ask because the noise is not present during agitation, only during the spin cycle.

Iv’e heard/seen this problem many times. The noise is caused by the fact that the agitate gear in the transmission is not fully disengaging from the agitator shaft during spin. It is the splines in the agitate gear rubbing against the splines on the agitator shaft because the gear is not fully disengaged. This is usually caused by a worn agitate cam which is only a few dollars but requires complete teardown of the gearcase. Unless you are an experienced mechanic, better to just replace the gearcase. Worth doing on this machine if it’s otherwise in good shape.
