Where to look/Open - fridge WARM

Hi,
I have an AMANA - AFD2535DEW. Freezer is cold, fridge is warm. It is a bottom freezer. I looked in the back of the freezer and there doesn’t appear to be any frost build up. At the back of the unit (outside), the fan is blowing, not on all the time. Over the past few months the refrigerator sounded a little noisy at times.

My question is, do I need to unscrew the inside of thefreezer to see coils? Or take off the back panal first? Looking through the slats on the back of the inside of the freezer, I don’t see any ice/snow, and everything looks clear, nothing blocking any flow (but I don’t know exactly where to look)..

Can you tell me how or where to look so I can proceed through the next steps. Once I get it open if needed, I can usually figure out things, but am worried, I will need a new unit.

Ok you said the fan on the outside is running, but is the fan on the inside of the freezer compartment running? If it is not running then that could be your problem. On some of these you will need to hold the door switch closed to hear the fan run. If it is bad then you will need this part.

Jeff, thanks for the reply, here is the UPDATE: I got the cover off the inside of the back of the freezer. There is some frost/condensation on the condenser. I tried to follow the directions on the post for trouble shooting this problem (the one that has a sticky on the subject). The first step was to find the defrost timer. I can not find it on any of the diagrams for this unit.

Could it be freezing up because the fan that is just above it facing up doesn’t appear to ever go on? OR is there most likely a problem with the defrost system since I can now see there is frost , which i wasn’t able to see before. The fan on the back of the fridge, on the outside still appears to be working.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. I gotta get some food in this house :slight_smile:

It will have frost if the fan is not running, on the upper coils.

Hi Jeff, I got the replacement motor, but the leads are different. Can you tell me how to tell which wire goes on which contact? Blue wire, white wire, need to be connected to the motor. And, it also came with a ground wire , which the original did not have, so I have no place to attach the ground, should I just leave it off?

And, Is there a drain pan? The frost is melting and going down but I can’t tell where it is draining too. I looked under the freezer from the front and don’t have a clue where the water is going, besides possibly all over my floor??

The new motor should have come with a connector for the wire plug inside your freezer. It does not matter which terminals you put the wires on. The ground wire needs to be put onto the fan motor onto the ground spade. (The terminal with a screw on it) It has a clip on the other end that slides onto the back cover. Hope this helps.

YEAH, THANK YOU THANK YOU…
The new fan motor is working and the fridge is cold, time to cracking a cold beer… but not done yet.. I have new frost on coils…

Two questions,

  1. where did the water go that melted off the coils.

  2. It has been about 1.5 hours and the coils in the freezer are evenly frosted up including the copper coil, on the back right.

I have not put the back of the inside freezer back on yet, I wanted to monitor it to make sure it is working. Do you think something else is wrong besides the motor fan because it is frosting up?

There is a drain pan under the refrigerator. When the unit goes into defrost, the frost melts and goes into the drain pan. You should see an even frost pattern across the coils when the refrigerator is running. It sounds like you fixed it! Glad we could help you on this.:slight_smile:

YEAH ! YES it is FIXED, Big Hug from this girl!!! And for anyone else wondering about the drain pan, I opened up the pannel on the outside back of the fridge, the drian pan is under the “fan” in the back and isn’t very large. It is set up so the water evaporates from the blowing of the fan. AND, if you have a lot of ice, it will overflow on this model, it isn’t very big, I didn’t have that much ice, so it didn’t overflow.
