Help!! We have a Whirlpool refrig that is leaking water out of some covered opening on the inside back of the refrig wall. What is causing it, and what do I need to do to fix it. Thank you!
Sounds like the drain (under the evaporator coils inside the freezer) is clogged and frozen up.
Remove the rear panel in the freezer and the freezer floor. Using a hair dryer, defrost the ice on the bottom and in the drain hole. Using a hot water make sure the drain is open. Check the bottom end of the drain hose which goes into the pan under the refrigerator (accessible from the back).

Thanks Gene. I forgot to mention that the water was leaking INSIDE the fridge out of that part that runs down from the freezer. Does your advice on how to fix it still apply???
Yes, that’s what I meant.

Thanks Gene!! Will give it a shot!!
You are welcome. Keep us posted.

hello Gene,
although this is an old thread, I just joined to post and thank you for the advice you took the time to post.
I did as you said. I took out the plastic pan at the bottom of the freezer, which was held in place by two 1/4" screws (all screws are 1/4"). it was loaded with ice. then…
I had to remove the ice maker, which I discarded because we don’t use it. there were two screws along the top, one at the bottom, and an electrical connector which has a tab that needs to be pulled outward to disconnect.
next is the metal plate, air scoop assembly.
the buildup of ice will probably make it difficult for the removal of the metal plate, as the unit needs to be lifted to the roof and pulled toward the front of the fridge. I had a buildup of ice that needed to be dealt with in order to avoid damage. after removing all ice buildup, I was done in the freezer compartment.
I checked and found that cold air was once again entering into the refrigerator (bottom) compartment. after reassembly, the job was done.
