Water Dispenser sending water to ice maker

Hi, I just bought a used fridge a couple of weeks ago and ran into some problems. When pressing the water dispenser lever, water will come out of the dispenser but it also sends water to the ice maker, causing it to overflow. After doing some research, I’ve found out it is either the diode(if the model has one) or the water inlet valve. I tried looking up to see if my model # has a diode but didnt find an answer.

Can someone give some advice whether if I need a new diode kit or inlet valve?

Also the water dispenser constantly drips, mostly after dispensing water but it does do it after while it hasn’t been touched. Im assuming there is water in the lines and I need to bleed the air out but I havent been able to really do that since the ice maker will overflow. Was just curious if that could be the valve too or just air in my water line.

sounds like your solenoid valves are sticking open due to hard water, sand , or maybe unit sat too long without being used. You could try cleaning or replacing solenoid valves

edit: oh and by the way, the person I purchased the fridge from said they never even used the water dispenser/ice maker, not sure if that’s true or not but thought I’d just add some more details.

The tech sheet does show a diode assembly even though it does not come up in the unit’s parts listing.
The below video should help you locate it if the unit includes one.

I cannot say if it is the valve or the diodes.
You would have to check the diodes with a meter.
Use a fairly high meter scale.
With the red lead on the single wire end (common) the diodes should conduct (have a fairly low resistance).
With the black lead on the single end wire the diodes should have infinite or very high resistance.

Hi denman thanks for the reply, I havent checked the diode yet with a meter(as I don’t have a meter yet) but wanted to give you an update. Since my original post I just turned off the water supply to the fridge but I was running low on ice so I decided to turn it back on for awhile so it can make me some.

One thing I noticed was, after the ice maker dropped the ice it already made into the bin, it refilled up, but it also over flowed itself. Originally I thought it would only overflow is if I hit the water dispenser but this time the water disp. was never touched. Also, it seems that when the ice maker receives water, it also sent water to the dispenser, not shooting out a bunch of water but a very fast drip. So basically the ice maker and water dispenser both send each other water when one of them calls for water. I don’t think these behaviors are new, I just didn’t notice them before.

That being said, I was wondering if this new information can give you a more exact answer on if its the valve or diode without using a meter. If the new info doesn’t help at all and I’m still at square one, I’ll just purchase a meter and find the exact problem myself. Thanks so much!

Update: Watched as the ice maker dumped ice and called for water 2 more times. These 2 times it didn’t over flow, only did it the first time.
