Kenmore Refrigertor 10651133210 Water dispenser activates on its own. will randomly dispense water without being pressed. I am guessing I need a new switch

For your Kenmore 106.51133210, random water dispensing is usually not caused by the water valve itself. In most cases, the issue is related to a stuck or shorted dispenser switch, a worn dispenser pad, or a dispenser control/keypad problem in the freezer door.

Here are a few things you can check:

Turn on the Control Lock at the dispenser.

  • If the random dispensing stops while Control Lock is enabled, that points toward the dispenser paddle, switch, or user interface (UI) control rather than the water valve.

Open the freezer door when the dispenser starts dispensing on its own.

  • On many models, opening the freezer door disables the dispenser.

  • If the water stops immediately when the door is opened, it indicates the valve is being energized electrically rather than leaking mechanically.

Inspect the dispenser paddle/lever.

  • Make sure it moves freely and returns completely when released.

  • Check for any signs of sticking, cracking, or trim interference that could cause the switch to activate unintentionally.

Check for moisture around the dispenser controls.

  • Moisture or condensation can sometimes cause the keypad or control board to register false inputs.

One additional quick test:

  • Disconnect power to the refrigerator before testing.

  • Check continuity across the red and blue wires while lightly touching the dispenser pad.

  • If continuity is present with only a very light touch, the dispenser pad may be worn and making intermittent contact, which can cause unexpected dispensing.

Most likely parts to inspect or replace:

  • Dispenser switch (microswitch)

  • Dispenser actuator/paddle assembly

  • Dispenser control board or keypad harness

Entering Service Diagnostics

  1. Make sure the refrigerator is powered on.

  2. Press and hold the two left-most buttons on the dispenser control (SW1 and SW2) for about 3 seconds.

  3. The display should enter Service Diagnostics and show Test 01.

Navigating Through Diagnostics

  • Press the Refrigerator Temperature UP (+) button to move to the next test.

  • Press the Refrigerator Temperature DOWN (-) button to move to the previous test.

  • Within a test, use the Freezer Temperature UP (+) and DOWN (-) buttons to change selections or activate components.

Exiting Diagnostics

You can exit Service Diagnostics by:

  • Pressing and holding SW1 and SW2 again for 3 seconds

  • Disconnecting power to the refrigerator

  • Allowing the diagnostics mode to time out

Recommended Tests

For this symptom, pay particular attention to:

  • Dispenser Switch Test

  • User Interface/Keypad Test

  • Water Valve Test

  • Door Switch Test

If the dispenser switch input changes from OFF to ON without anyone pressing the paddle, the most likely causes are:

  • A faulty dispenser microswitch

  • A wiring issue within the freezer door
