Water dispenser intermittently works and ice production is slow

Brand: GE
Model Number: PFE29PSDASS
Main Symptom: Water dispenser intermittently works & ice production is slow
What happens & when: When pressing water dispenser arm, it can take 5 to 30 seconds for water to come out. Ice production is also slow.

Error Code (if any): None
Parts or tests already tried: None

When depressing the water dispenser arm, a relay click is heard from the top of the refrigerator. Holding the arm down will result in water eventually being released and the water valve at the back of the fridge clicks. This can take 5 to 30 seconds and more recently, the water valve at the back of the fridge never clicks and no water is released. Ice production is also slow, I assume for the same reason…water isn’t being released.

Any repair guidance appreciate.

Thanks!

Hello, let’s start with the simple stuff: how long has it been since the water filter was changed? If you have the bypass, try installing that. if you are sure you have a proper water supply going to the refrigerator, the inlet valves would be next on my list to replace.

DavidP - It was the simple stuff. The filter was replaced back in February and I didn’t think it would have been the issue. Installed the bypass and water flows normally when the dispenser arm is pressed and I heard the ice maker fill with water. Installed a new filter and flushed the system per GE’s installation instructions. Thank you!

On another note, for the last several years, there has been an ice dam created at the top of the ice bucket which keeps the ice maker arm from resetting. Resulting in ice not being made, as if the bucket was full. Any ideas on this issue?

Thanks!
Cole

I had a GE that would clump the ice towards the back of the bucket. My issue was the defrost cycle, causing a melting and then refreezing. When you dispense ice, it should move the ice toward the front of the bucket. I had to manually go in and break it up. I think it was a poor design.

This forms a stalagmite in the ice bucket in front of where the ice normally drops down. Like excess water drips at the same spot until it builds up and blocks the ice maker arm from resetting. I have to clear it every 7-10 days or it stops making ice.

That sounds like the seal is bad on your icemaker, you will need to replace it. When water comes in to fill the mold, the seal between the mold and the plastic rake is bad and lets water drip through. WR30X28731 Icemaker | Genuine GE OEM In Stock

When I use the refrigerator model number, it comes up with this ice maker WR49X31524 which is different from the one you’ve listed.

Which one is correct for the PFE29PSDASS with serial VZ520355

Thanks!

i used the model number you submitted. I come up with WR30X28731 Icemaker | Genuine GE OEM In Stock

David,

The issue with water not dispensing and ice not being made consistently still persists. I thought it had cleared with the new filter but that was not the case.
Depressing the paddle to get water is intermittent. As with before, the paddle will click when the switch is depressed, a relay can be heard operating at the top of the door or top of the fridge. Sometimes the water valve will click and send water, sometimes it doesn’t.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
