I replaced the control board OEM18707493 in the Kenmore elite after talking to tech support and we decided the triac had failed on the old one it has worked fine until today and it is doing the same as before. Model 796.31552610 Kenmore elite. When you touch the power button it starts filling with water and will not stop until you unplug it. If you plug it back in it won’t run water until you touch power button again.
If you access the main control, does it look like there are any spots that might be discolored almost as if the spot was overheating? Also, do you have a multimeter available for testing? If you do, what AC voltage reading do you find when testing from the black wire at the black two-wire connector to a bare metal spot on the washer frame?
